If You Know The History – 8th February 1908 Rangers 1 Celtic 2 Scottish Cup

Season 1906-07 had been a memorable one for Celtic Football Club. They had won the first ‘Double’ of League/Scottish Cup in Scottish Football history and had also added the Glasgow Cup to make up an impressive list.

The following season of 1907-08 was also turning out to be a successful one. By this time of the season, Celtic had already won the Glasgow Cup – beating Rangers in the final after two replays – and were in top position in the league table.

In the Scottish Cup, Celtic had disposed of Peebles Rovers 4-0 in round one and on this day in 1908, a crowd of around 40,000 was at Ibrox to see the second round tie between the Glasgow rivals. The Celtic team was an experienced one; Adams, McNair, Weir, Young, Loney, Mitchell, Bennett, McMenemy, Kivlichan, Somers and Hamilton.

One of the newer players was Willie Kivlichan, who had joined Celtic in May 1907 after two years with Rangers. He had made four appearances, with three goals, for Celtic so far but had not featured in the first team since 16th November. Fortunately for Celtic, Willie chose this particular day to hit top form, scoring the two goals which put the Light Blues out of the competition and setting up Celtic for a quarter-final tie against Raith Rovers.
