This shot was taken in 1909 and shows manager Willie Maley, by that time 41 years of age, alongside centre-half and occasional wing-half Peter Johnstone. Seven years later, during the First World War, Peter decided he wanted to do his bit for the cause and joined up for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. While training in London, he made the occasional trip back to Glasgow to help Celtic out, indeed winning a Glasgow Cup medal in October 1916 in his last match for the club. To see more action, Peter transferred to the Seaforth Highlanders and was soon on his way to France. Tragically, however, sometime in the Battle of Arras – between 12th to 16th May 1917 – Peter Johnstone was killed and is buried in a unknown grave. He left a wife and two children.
