Twelve Celtic Pics At Christmas – 23rd December

This drawing shows a football match at Celtic Park in 1898. The Pavilion where the players changed is to the extreme left at the back; the stand alongside it burned down in 1904 and was replaced by what became known in later years as ‘The Jungle’. Note that there is a running track round the pitch and outside that, a slightly banked cycle track too. There would appear to be a good crowd present and as you can see from the player just to the left of the goal, Celtic were in the green-and-white vertical stripes of the period. There would also appear to be a good crowd of ‘Glasgow’s Finest’ stationed round the pitch in case of trouble.
