If You Know The History – 2nd April 1958 Willie Maley died in Glasgow

On this day in 1958, Willie Maley died in a nursing home at Mansion House Road on the south side of Glasgow. He was 23 days short of his 90th birthday.

Right from Celtic’s beginnings up to 1940, the name of Willie Maley was associated in one way or another with Celtic Football Club. During his days as manager in particular, stores were told and anecdotes related by players both past and present. A fair percentage of these were not very complimentary, describing him as difficult to deal with, grumpy, prone to favouritism etc. From my own experience, I would suggest that most managers could be accused of those traits but, in the case of Willie Maley, a brief review of his record both as a player and manager of Celtic surely shows that in whatever way he went about his business, it was extremely successful;-
