2nd November 1983 Celtic 5 Sporting Lisbon 0
Having seen off Aarhus of Denmark 5-1 on aggregate in the first round of the UEFA Cup in season 1983/84, Celtic were drawn against Sporting Lisbon in round two.
The first leg was in Portugal, when 57,500 turned up in the Jose Alvalade Stadium to see Sporting win 2-0, both goals, one in either half, scored by Jordao. Two weeks later, a slightly disappointing attendance of 39,183 gathered at Parkhead for the return. No doubt many fans who would normally have been there thought that Celtic would not recover from the deficit but never were so many so entirely wrong.
From the start, Celtic rose to the occasion and treated their opponents with disdain, sweeping them aside as the goals rained in from Burns (17), Macadam (43),
McClair (45), MacLeod (57) and McGarvey (59), putting them into the third round on a 5-2 aggregate, where Nottingham Forest were waiting.
