If You Know The History – 5th October 1966 Zurich 0 Celtic 3

Two-up from the first-round, first-leg tie in the club’s initial venture into the European Cup, Celtic ran out on this day in 1966 at the Stadion Letzigrund to face Zurich in the second leg.

For the first 15 minutes or so, the Swiss Champions did pose a threat but Tommy Gemmell scored in 22 minutes to steady any Celtic nerves and Stevie Chalmers got another in the 38th minute. Confidence then grew, with Jimmy Johnstone  showing  the form he was capable of, Bobby Murdoch spraying passes all over the pitch and Ronnie Simpson a virtual spectator.

Three minutes after the interval, Celtic were awarded a penalty when Bobby Lennox was hauled down inside the penalty area and Tommy Gemmell did his usual efficient job from the spot, giving Celtic a 3-0 win on the night, 5-0 on aggregate.
