3rd January 1966 Celtic 5 Rangers 1
At the New Year period of 1966, goalkeeper Bent Martin had arrived from Aarhus for a month’s trial and Celtic were sitting joint top of the table, having beaten Clyde 3-1 at Shawfield in the New Year’s Day game, thanks to goals by Joe McBride and Bobby Lennox.
On this day in 1966, around 65,000 were at Parkhead for the second Old Firm league clash of the season, Rangers having won the first one 2-1. A young right-back called Jim Craig was a nervous man in the dressing room before that match, as it was his first outing against the Light Blues and he did not feel any better when Davie Wilson opened the scoring in only the second minute.
Still one –down at half-time, the eltic players then received some fairly pointed instructions from Jock Stein in the dressing room and were much brighter in the second half. A hat-trick by Stevie Chalmers – in 49, 62 and 90 minutes – a fine shot by Charlie Gallagher from the edge of the box a\nd an even better one by Bobby Murdoch from all of 30 yards, made the final score 5-1, pushing Celtic two points clear of Rangers with a game in hand.
