This day in Celtic History: 9th December 1972

9th December LC Final 1972 Celtic 1 Hibs 2

On this day, in different years, various Celtic teams have had good victories over Hibs. In 1989, for instance, goals by Dariusz Wdowczyk, Jacky Dziekanowski and Andy Walker resulted in a 3-0 victory. In 1995, it was 4-0, thanks to Jackie McNamara, Phil O’Donnell, Simon Donnelly and Pierre van Hooijdonk.

Unfortunately, though, on this day in 1972, the team of that time failed against Hibs, causing the Celtic fans a lot of grief, as the match was the League Cup Final.

Only 7 months previously, in that same year, the teams had met in the Scottish Cup final, when a hat-trick of goals by Dixie Deans helped Celtic to a 6-1 win.

But in the League Cup final, with Danny McGrain playing in his first major occasion, Celtic struggled and by the 66th minute were 2-down, the first by future Celt Pat Stanton and the other by Jimmy O’Rourke.

Kenny Dalglish pulled one back in 77 minutes but that was as good as it got, Billy McNeill leading the team up to collect runners-up medals in the League Cup for the 3rd successive season.
