19th November 1966 Dunfermline 4 Celtic 5
For those fans fortunate enough to follow Celtic through their ‘Annus Mirabilis’ of 1966/67, there is one league match that always features in their memories.
On this day in 1966, table-toppers Celtic ran out at East End Park to face Dunfermline, at that point in 6th place in the table, with 22,000 packed in. The Celtic fans soon looked shell-shocked, though, as the Pars were 2-up with just over half-an-hour gone.
Then Bobby Murdoch pulled one back for Celtic in 34 minutes to help the fans mood, although they were soon down again as Dunfermline scored a third. Jimmy Johnstone made it 3-2 in the 43rd minute; Dunfermline got a fourth just after the interval; then came the Celtic fight-back.
Bertie Auld, pushing forward from his midfield position, made the score 4-3 in 62 minutes; Joe McBride, in the midst of a great run, levelled the scores in 69 minutes; and just on the whistle, he did it again from the penalty spot, his 15th goal for the season thus far, giving Celtic a 5-4 victory to continue the charge for the title.
