Yogi calls the tune: 23rd October 1965

The Venue. Hampden Park.
The Date. 23rd October 1965.
The Occasion. The League Cup Final
The Attendance. 107,600

The Time. Roughly 3.18pm.
The Action. When a high cross came into the Rangers box, centre-half Ronnie McKinnon,
under pressure from Joe McBride, unbelievably handled the ball to give a penalty to Celtic. Up stepped John Hughes, who, as we can see here, calmly stroked the ball past goalkeeper Billy Ritchie to give Celtic the lead.

Other Celtic players, left to right, are Joe McBride (9), Jimmy Johnstone, Charlie Gallagher and Tommy Gemmell.

The Time. Roughly 3.28pm
The Action. Jimmy Johnstone went on a weaving run, which left-back Davie Provan was adjudged to have blocked unfairly. John Hughes again stepped forward to score from the resulting penalty, although this time Ritchie did get a hand to it.

The Time. Roughly 4.40pm
The Action. Ronnie Simpson’s attempted clearance with his palm merely bounced off right-back Ian Young’s head into the net to pull one back for Rangers.

The Score. Celtic 2 Rangers 1
The Aftermath. Sadly, Celtic’s half-lap of honour to show the trophy to their supporters ended in chaos when some Rangers fans, mainly youths, invaded the pitch.
